Just wanted to know if it was possible to make a good panorama pic with my loved olympus camera. The picture is @ Guanajuato, México. (Click to see a larger version)

biology vs. religion

All in the same place, just take a look the growing & living cactus and the stone & static cross. I go for the cactus ;)

TED Technology, Entertainment, Design

I have to recommend this web community, the concept is simple, series of talks about several and quite diverse issues, from Science & Tech to Political affairs going through Arts and Culture. Its not new concept, but what I really like about this is that the conferences are multimedia available in TED's website. Best of all are under a CC license, so they are freely distributable, you are even encouraged to divulgate the ideas. Sounds quite abstract, previous post of Craig Venter talk about metagenomics, going to other brilliant people (of contrasting focus) like Bono of U2. Weird but I love being eclectic. Here I post a couple of TED's science videos: First James Watson and how he and Crick discover the DNA structure and current work about tracking illness in particular genes and genome regions. Second Richard Dawkins "middle world & queer" scientific spreading talk.

Maybe here in Mexico we are too far to get into this discussion level, the only thing that I remember right now about forums like TED is Televisa's (major broadcaster here in Mexico) awful Espacio annual meeting, maybe an opportunity if you are going into media market, but young people working seriously in economics, politics, arts and science probably need a multidisciplinary space to discuss in a deep way with other areas people. Finally I'd love to assist to a talk with one of this clever people... long way to go to get into major leagues....

evolution of inflorescence

Nice paper: Evolution and Development of Inflorescence Architectures of Prusinkiewicz et al. 2007 (Science) Involves almost everything I like from developmental biology to fitness landscapes and give a link between genetics, plant architecture and environmental/taxonomic constrains in the forms of the plant inflorescences (the structures that bear flowers). An obligate paper, for sure..

Family bars @ México

Just love the concept. Tons of mean bars are spread all around with this kind of ads in the entrance... "Ambiente familiar" = Familiar atmosphere...

This place has a familiar atmosphere for your tranquility! Scandals not allowed...
Don't know why... but this is an open call for mean people, and ironically are the usual customers of this places...

The power of graphs

Don't know if this is just a personal perception, but maybe most of my biologist colleagues are really scared about statistics, bioinformatics and mostly math. Nowadays if you are scared about this you're kind out of the business... and today I give tribute to the graphs, they are capable of telling a lot without tons of words and when you work with tons of data you are able to become a kind of abstract artist...
